THE WAVES

Chicama is truly special—a natural wave magnet and an ideal playground for Mid-Length and Longboard enthusiasts.

With a reliable swell window from late February to September, it ranks among the most consistent surf destinations on the planet. It’s also perfect for multiple wave disciplines including Surfing, surf foiling, and wing foiling.

But beyond its reliability, what makes Chicama unforgettable is the volume of waves. There’s always something breaking, offering every surfer endless opportunities to catch that perfect ride.

THE BOAT

Save your energy paddling back to the line-up. After riding the longest waves you could only have dreamed of, relax and let our taxi boat bring you back to the outside for another ride.

Our experienced boat drivers, who are also local surfers, are prepared to assist you in strategically positioning yourself for the next wave.

To increase your surfing time while Surfing Chicama with us, we’ll have Zodiac rides available for up to 2 daily sessions of 2 hours each.

THE BOAT

Why walk or paddle back when you can cruise? After riding a wave at Chicama, relax while our surf boat brings you effortlessly back to the take off zone.

Our knowledgeable team—local surfers and expert boat handlers—will guide you into ideal positioning.

Enjoy more time riding and less time paddling with two zodiac-assisted sessions per day, each up to two hours long.

SURF, CULTURE & ANCIENT WONDERS

This trip is so much more than just unforgettable waves—it’s a deep dive into Peru’s vibrant surf culture and ancient history.

Between sessions at the world-class point of Chicama, we’ll explore Huanchaco, one of the few officially designated World Surfing Reserves and home to the traditional reed boats known as caballitos de totora.

You’ll also get the chance to walk through the awe-inspiring ruins of Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and surf—where every day offers a new way to connect with the soul of this magical coastline.

THE HOTEL

Our belief at Mauka Surfaris is that both the time you spend ON the water and the time you spend OFF it are equally important.

Therefore, you will be staying in a beachfront hotel with a view of Chicama point.

Both the ground level (with access to the garden), or the first floor (with a balcony to check the surf in the morning) have comfortable and spacious rooms.

The hotel offers daily yoga lessons and an infinity pool over the beautiful Puerto Malabrigo beach.

Check Out Chicama!

THE FOOD

All meals are included during your stay.
Each dish is a masterpiece, meticulously crafted by seasoned chefs who pay homage to Peru's diverse culinary heritage.

From the tangy ceviche, a symphony of fresh seafood marinated in zesty citrus juices and adorned with vibrant peppers and herbs, to the succulent anticuchos, skewers of tender marinated meats grilled to perfection, every bite tells a story of Peruvian culinary mastery.

THE EQUIPMENT

board and leash

You can travel with your own Surf equipment or Rent one of our available boards.

If you prefer to bring your own board, LATAM Airlines, the national airline of Peru, is renowned for transporting surfers from around the world to Surf in Peru.

We are happy to give you a quote for flight options to travel to Peru, regardless of the situation.

Board recommendation

If you’re uncertain about which board to bring or rent out, make sure to choose one that feels comfortable for you to paddle and glide on. Waves are super long but sometimes quiet soft specially at the take off so a longer/more volume board than you’re used to can be a bonus here in Chicama.

It is always wise to bring an extra leash.

Where Every Wave Tells a Story

Chicama, Peru

OTHER ACTIVITIES

After surfing, why not learn traditional fishing with a local? You and your friends can expect to have a great time line fishing from the shore.

In Chicama, taking a stroll on the newly constructed boardwalk to observe the sunset or enjoying a Pisco Sour at the hotel pool is always enjoyable.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Bring a good zinc sunscreen as the sun is usually pretty strong.

During summer months a 2mm top and board shorts are enough however during the winter season, a full 3/2mm wetsuit would be recommended.

FAQ's

Which airport should I fly into?

You should fly into Trujillo International Airport (TRU), also known as Captain FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos International Airport.

How do I get to Chicama from Trujillo?

Please share your flight number and estimated arrival time, and we’ll arrange a private transfer from Trujillo Airport to your accommodation in Puerto Malabrigo (Chicama).

When is the best time to surf in Chicama?

It depends on what you’re looking for:

  • Late February to Early March:
Ideal for smaller, friendlier waves (hip to shoulder high). This is the end of summer, so you can expect warm air and pleasant conditions.

  • April to Mid-May:
Great for consistent hip to head-high waves and still warm all around.
Water temps usually require a 3/2mm wetsuit.

  • Mid-May to August:
Best for those chasing bigger swells (shoulder to overhead+).
Expect cooler air and water temperatures, so we recommend bringing a 4/3mm wetsuit.

Should I buy travel insurance/trip insurance?

It’s not mandatory, but we strongly recommend getting travel insurance that covers water sports.
Before entering the water, you’ll be required to sign a waiver.

Can I stay for fewer days than the program?

Yes, you’re welcome to join us for fewer days, but please note that the full program rate will still apply. Our retreats run back-to-back, and it’s not possible for us to sell the remaining days once the program has started.

How do my transfers work?

Once we have your flight number and arrival date, we’ll arrange your transfer directly to the hotel.

When you arrive at the airport, you’ll find a Mauka Surfaris representative holding a sign waiting for you at the arrivals area to take you straight to the retreat.

What if the waves are too small or too big?

If the waves are expected to be too small, we’ll take you to a more exposed spot that picks up more swell—this could be Huanchaco, Pacasmayo, or even some local secret spots 😉.

Chicama itself offers different sections that handle various wave heights, so there’s almost always something to suit your level. The section breaking closest to the beach is usually the smallest, and waves are rarely too big, especially during the time of year we run our retreats here.

Should I bring my own surfboard or rent one locally?

We always recommend bringing your own equipment, as nothing beats using gear you’re familiar with.
That said, if you’d rather not travel with a board, we have quality boards available for rent. Just let us know your usual board type (dimensions, volume, fin setup), and we’ll do our best to match it.

Is Chicama crowded?

Not really. Chicama’s point break is divided into five different sections, allowing surfers to spread out. Plus, the wave frequency is high, so you won’t wait long for your next ride.
It’s probably the closest thing you’ll ever experience to a natural wave pool.

What should I wear when I’m surfing in Chicama?

February to April you’ll probably be fine with a 3/2mm wetsuit.

From Late May to July a 3/2mm or a 4/3mm wetsuit.

Can I bring non-surfers along? What can they do?

Absolutely! Non-surfers are more than welcome and often have a great time.
They can enjoy:

  • The beach and ocean view

  • The hotel’s infinity pool, hot tub, and sauna

  • Massages (available on request)

  • The lounge and bar, which offers stunning views and delicious cocktails

It’s a perfect setting to relax and unwind, even without surfing.

Do you offer vegan or vegetarian options?

Yes, we do! Our kitchen is happy to cater to vegan and vegetarian diets. We offer a variety of fresh, healthy, and flavorful plant-based dishes made with local ingredients.
If you have any specific dietary preferences or restrictions, just let us know in advance and our chef will do their best to accommodate your needs.
