PORTUGAL SURF RETREAT

Ericeira, Portugal

Introducing the first surf retreat designed for people 40+ who are ready to swap spreadsheets for swell, meetings for mellow waves, and burnout for boardshorts.

Whether you surfed in the ’80s and life got in the way…
Or you just miss the feeling of paddling out and not caring what anyone thinks…

We made this camp for you!

EXPLORE MORE OF PORTUGAL

No Crowds. No Parties. Just Quality.

This isn’t a surf camp for backpackers in their twenties.
It’s for people like you — who value comfort, connection, and real waves.

We keep the group intimate and intentional — no more than 6 surf guests per retreat — so you get personal attention, tailored surf coaching, and genuine conversations, not just noise.

WHY ERICEIRA?

Europe’s Surfing Jewel

Ericeira is Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve, and it delivers.
Within a few kilometers, you’ll find over nine quality breaks — from mellow point breaks perfect for longboards, to world-class reef waves.

Whether you’re returning to the sport after a break or seeking to fine-tune your skills, there’s a wave here with your name on it.

Comfortable hammocks and puffs let you read a book, play some music, or just relax with that cold beer or glass of Portuguese wine.

THE FOOD

When in Portugal… EAT like a Portuguese

Time spent with friends at a table in Portugal is not just a meal… It’s a cultural event even when you’re not celebrating anything.

From delicious “petiscos” to munch on with a perfect glass of Portuguese wine to amazing recipes passed down through generations of amazing cooks and chefs, enjoying traditional Portuguese food is an easy way for travellers to fall in love with the country.

We’ll introduce you to famous & typical dishes that Portugal is known for – but in the best spots that only local people know about.

THE EQUIPMENT

board, paddle & leash

You can travel with your own Surf equipment or Rent one of our available boards.

If you prefer to bring your own board, LATAM Airlines, the national airline of Peru, is renowned for transporting surfers from around the world to Surf in Peru.

We are happy to give you a quote for flight options to travel to Peru, regardless of the situation.

Board recommendation

If you’re uncertain about which board to bring or rent out, make sure to choose one that feels comfortable for you to paddle and glide on. Waves are super long but sometimes quiet soft specially at the take off so a longer/more volume board than you’re used to can be a bonus here in Chicama.

It is always wise to bring an extra leash.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

This Retreat Is For You If:

You’re over 40 and ready for a surf trip that meets you where you are
You want waves, not crowds
You appreciate meaningful experiences over parties
You want to connect — with nature, people, and yourself
You’re curious, open, and excited about finding out the best Portugal has to offer

What you can expect:

🏄‍♂️ Daily surf sessions tailored to real bodies & realistic recovery times

🎓 Instruction that meets you where you are — shredder, rusty, or “board-curious”

🧘 Gentle stretching sessions that help, not hurt

🍻 Cold beers you actually earned

🍽️ Group meals, bonfire hangs, and real conversations

A supportive, ego-free environment where laughing at yourself is basically required

OTHER ACTIVITIES

After surfing, why not learn traditional fishing with a local? You and your friends can expect to have a great time line fishing from the shore.

In Chicama, taking a stroll on the newly constructed boardwalk to observe the sunset or enjoying a Pisco Sour at the hotel pool is always enjoyable.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Bring a good zinc sunscreen as the sun is usually pretty strong.

During summer months a 2mm top and board shorts are enough however during the winter season, a full 3/2mm wetsuit would be recommended.

FAQ's

Which airport should I fly into?

You should fly into Trujillo International Airport (TRU), also known as Captain FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos International Airport.

How do I get to Chicama from Trujillo?

Please share your flight number and estimated arrival time, and we’ll arrange a private transfer from Trujillo Airport to your accommodation in Puerto Malabrigo (Chicama).

When is the best time to surf in Chicama?

It depends on what you’re looking for:

  • Late February to Early March:
Ideal for smaller, friendlier waves (hip to shoulder high). This is the end of summer, so you can expect warm air and pleasant conditions.

  • April to Mid-May:
Great for consistent hip to head-high waves and still warm all around.
Water temps usually require a 3/2mm wetsuit.

  • Mid-May to August:
Best for those chasing bigger swells (shoulder to overhead+).
Expect cooler air and water temperatures, so we recommend bringing a 4/3mm wetsuit.

Should I buy travel insurance/trip insurance?

It’s not mandatory, but we strongly recommend getting travel insurance that covers water sports.
Before entering the water, you’ll be required to sign a waiver.

Can I stay for fewer days than the program?

Yes, you’re welcome to join us for fewer days, but please note that the full program rate will still apply. Our retreats run back-to-back, and it’s not possible for us to sell the remaining days once the program has started.

How do my transfers work?

Once we have your flight number and arrival date, we’ll arrange your transfer directly to the hotel.

When you arrive at the airport, you’ll find a Mauka Surfaris representative holding a sign waiting for you at the arrivals area to take you straight to the retreat.

What if the waves are too small or too big?

If the waves are expected to be too small, we’ll take you to a more exposed spot that picks up more swell—this could be Huanchaco, Pacasmayo, or even some local secret spots 😉.

Chicama itself offers different sections that handle various wave heights, so there’s almost always something to suit your level. The section breaking closest to the beach is usually the smallest, and waves are rarely too big, especially during the time of year we run our retreats here.

Should I bring my own surfboard or rent one locally?

We always recommend bringing your own equipment, as nothing beats using gear you’re familiar with.
That said, if you’d rather not travel with a board, we have quality boards available for rent. Just let us know your usual board type (dimensions, volume, fin setup), and we’ll do our best to match it.

Is Chicama crowded?

Not really. Chicama’s point break is divided into five different sections, allowing surfers to spread out. Plus, the wave frequency is high, so you won’t wait long for your next ride.
It’s probably the closest thing you’ll ever experience to a natural wave pool.

What should I wear when I’m surfing in Chicama?

February to April you’ll probably be fine with a 3/2mm wetsuit.

From Late May to July a 3/2mm or a 4/3mm wetsuit.

Can I bring non-surfers along? What can they do?

Absolutely! Non-surfers are more than welcome and often have a great time.
They can enjoy:

  • The beach and ocean view

  • The hotel’s infinity pool, hot tub, and sauna

  • Massages (available on request)

  • The lounge and bar, which offers stunning views and delicious cocktails

It’s a perfect setting to relax and unwind, even without surfing.

Do you offer vegan or vegetarian options?

Yes, we do! Our kitchen is happy to cater to vegan and vegetarian diets. We offer a variety of fresh, healthy, and flavorful plant-based dishes made with local ingredients.
If you have any specific dietary preferences or restrictions, just let us know in advance and our chef will do their best to accommodate your needs.
